Allan Madsen is a Danish artist who now lives and works in Murcia in Spain. He first started studying art in London where he lived for ten years from 1971 to 1981, where he also studied and taught Renaissance lute music. He then decided to devote himself completely to the visual arts and moved to Paris, where he lived for the next seven years. While he was based in Paris, he travelled extensively throughout Italy and Spain, before moving to Sweden in the 1980's.
Allan Madsen has had numerous successful solo exhibitions at Jorgensen Fine Art and has found a large audience for his paintings in Ireland. His still life paintings are noted for their scumbled surface texture, which evokes ancient plaster fresco paintings. The main focus of his paintings is often a simple still life arrangement such as a bowl of fruit, or sometimes just the empty bowl itself, set against a pale background. The exquisitely painted objects in his paintings, on closer inspection, often appear to fade away and merge into the background, as if they too like the antique frecsoes they evoke are susceptible to the vagaries of time.
