Born in London in 1945, Anthony Christian showed artistic talent from a very young age and was allowed, as a precocious ten-year-old, to copy old master paintings at the National Gallery, London. It was here that he came under his two most powerful influences, Rembrandt and Rubens. His technique falls somewhere between the Old Masters and the Impressionists. Beneath the minute detail and high finish there is a surprising spontaneity and freedom of brushwork. Like his mentor Rubens, he works at speed whilst “under the spell” of his subject. He had his first solo exhibition at Jorgensen Fine Art, Dublin in 2002, and also exhibited in many of our group exhibitions at the gallery, and we are delighted to exhibit his paintings once again in our new gallery.
