Born on the island of St. Helena in 1927, the nine-year-old Campbell Bruce moved to England, where he went on to study at the Croydon College of Art, gaining a N.D.D. qualification in 1950 and in 1953 an A.R.C.A. from the Royal College of Art.
Before moving to Ireland in 1974, Campbell taught painting at various U.K. colleges, including North Staffordshire Polytechnic and Canterbury College of Art & Design. In Ireland he was made Professor of Fine Art at N.C.A.D. and was elected H.R.H.A. in 2005.
