Born in 1962 into the family of a famous Russian artist, Leonid Demin, Andrey was sent as a ten-year-old to art school where, surrounded by more experienced artists, he worked mainly on still-lifes. In 1996 he was discovered by Sokol Fine Art who exhibited his works at the Roy Miles Gallery in Bruton Street, Mayfair. Andrey’s travels across the U.K., Germany, Switzerland and Ireland have influenced his landscape painting. He professes himself particularly inspired by the beauty of the Irish landscape and by Irish mythology. As befits an artist trained in the traditional Russian impressionist style, he swathes his canvases with light. The misty light of the Irish countryside lends itself nicely to his depiction of nature. All is mystery and imagination. His open, airy style conveys an otherworldliness which calls to mind the kingdom of Titania and Oberon. There is a gentle serenity to his work, nothing to jar the senses. His landscapes, particularly, have a wistful air of innocence and honesty. His floral pieces, too, are uncomplicated and immediate. That these beautiful paintings are so straight-forward and easy to read is, no doubt, a major factor in Andrey’s international success. That they represent a calm oasis in these times of international despondency is another.
