Ian McAllister was born in Newtownards, Co. Down and studied
fine art at the University of Ulster. He first exhibited at the Eakin Gallery in Belfast in 1993 and since the early nineties has been contributing to group exhibitions at Jorgensen Fine Art. To date he has had four solo exhibitions at the gallery. His work is now represented in public and private collections across the U.K., Europe, the U.S.A. and Ireland. Although his oeuvre encompasses landscape and figurative painting, still life painting remains McAllister's primary focus. It is in the heightened realism of his still lives that one can detect echoes of the "golden age" of Dutch painting and elements of the 17th century Spanish masters, such as Zurbaran. A realism that through the juxtaposition of objects, the idiosyncrasies of composition and use of visual puns often borders on the surreal. It is no wonder he has been described by Dr. Brian Kennedy of the Ulster Museum as 'one of the most interesting still life painters working in Ireland today' |
