The human figure is what Elizabeth le Jeune chooses to do; not the idealized human figure but honest-to-goodness, real-life, everyday figures doing everyday things. They stand, they consider, they skate, they strut, they pose and they just be. Elizabeth tries not to come between herself and her work. Although her figures are, by-and-large, long-limbed and elegant, Elizabeth does not look for beauty in a model; she looks for “a bit of sincerity and honesty in a getting weirder by the minute world!” Her very act of seeking out life adds colour to her work. “Drag queens as modern-day goddesses? “ says Elizabeth. As a young woman, this self-taught sculptor, daughter of the painter James le Jeune, was undecided as to the path which her creativity should take. Over a drink in Searson’s Pub one day her father suggested sculpture : she has never looked back. |
