Since her début Dublin exhibition in 1998, Olivia has established herself on the international scene and completed several important public commissions. The strength of Olivia’s sculptures derives from their confident air; each figure, being bien dans sa peau, owns its space. Often the subject depicted adds its own powerful presence to the equation, the Amazons and Patriarch Bartholomew in this exhibition, for instance. At times it is in the narrative depicted which furnishes the dynamic, as in Centaur and Lapith Woman II and Salomé: the act is in progress or just about to be committed. Influenced by twentieth-century Italian sculptors, such as Marino Marini, Arturo Martini and Giacomo Manzu, her work is very much informed by Greek mythology. Whilst the pieces stand alone, one’s appreciation of them can only be enhanced by some knowledge of the legends to which Olivia refers. | |
