Alexey Terenin

Alexey Terenin’s architectural training is palpable in his work. His sense of harmony, his structure, his discipline all voice it abroad. The defining characteristic of his work, however, is an intellectualism grounded in deep introspection and wide reading. His paintings pose questions and highlight observations. His subject-matter is in constant flux as he veers this way and that in search of . . . what ? This is what renders his work so exciting, so unpredictable. What will come next ? What is he saying to us ? He is positing theories for our consideration – and his own. Often he does this in a highly visual manner by juxtaposing images chosen seemingly at random but in fact with careful premeditation. Firstly we are intrigued, then involved and finally partisan. He takes a notion, throws it in the air and leaves the viewer to pick up the pieces and reassemble. This makes for exhilarating art which one feels the need to come back to again and again. Born in Moscow in 1969, Alexey was raised in Prague from the age of four. The son of an architect he graduated from the Moscow Architectural Academy in 1992. He never practised as an architect being invited on graduation to design a stage set for Moscow’s State Bolshoi Theatre production of Igor Stravinsky’s ballet Capriccio. He was subsequently invited to participate in visual art festivals in the Czech Republic, Germany, Holland, Belgium and France. This is Alexey’s first showing in Ireland.
