What first strikes one about the paintings of Colin Watson is their stillness; a monumental stillness which equates to meditation. An exhibition by this artist is akin to a religious experience; there is a ritualistic air about many of the works. The clamour and distractions of the outside world fall away as the viewer is drawn into the composition. The doorway is a constant leitmotif encouraging inclusion and banishing indifference. The paintings speak to us in a confidential tone, engaging us and beckoning us into their space. Restricting himself to a subdued palette, he lures us along a path of sensuality into an occasion of introspection. Expectation is often a character in his mise-en-scènes. That intense sense of knowing being alive which characterises his figurative works is also apparent in his landscapes. A dissolving into nature in an almost pantheistic manner is beguiling and seductive. Colin would, one feels sure, agree with Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot when he said ‘Reality is one part of art, feeling completes it…Before any site and any object, abandon yourself to your first impression. If you have really been touched, you will convey to others the sincerity of your emotion’. Since graduating in Fine Art from the University of Ulster in 1988 Colin Watson has exhibited in London, New York, Northern Ireland, Marrakech, Tangiers and Dublin. He has shown at the Royal Academy in London, the Royal Ulster Academy and the Royal Hibernian Academy. He was awarded prizes at the R.U.A. and the R.H.A. In 1999 he was given the Ireland Fund of Great Britain Annual Arts Award. His work was shown in the BP Portrait Prize Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery and at The Discerning Eye at the Mall Galleries in London. His work features in many public collections, including the Arts Council for Northern Ireland, the Royal Geographical Society, London and the National Self-Portrait Collection of Ireland, Limerick. His exhibition at Jorgensen Fine Art marks his début solo exhibition in Dublin. |
