Robert Wraith R.P., born in London, left Stowe at sixteen and went to Florence to study painting, drawing and the traditional technique of fresco at the invitation of Pietro Annigoni.
Since then he has had seventeen one-man exhibitions in Britain and America including The Albemarle Gallery, The Mall Galleries, The Belgrave Gallery, The King Street Galleries, Cadogan Contemporary, John Martin of London and The Christ Church Picture Gallery, Oxford, and has been the recipient of many awards including the Greenshields Foundation Award. He has work in the collection of HM The Queen as well as more than 40 pictures in the private collection of HRH The Prince of Wales, and also in the collections of The Vatican, The Royal Collection Windsor, The National Trust, Chatsworth, Oxford University, Cambridge University, Eton College, The MCC, Shell International and many others. A long list of distinguished portrait sitters have included HM The Queen, The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire commissioned by HRH The Prince of Wales, The Archbishops of Canterbury and York, and Nelson Mandela, drawn while accompanying HRH The Prince of Wales as travelling artist on his official visit to South Africa in 1997. Other work for The Prince includes two series of pictures of the house and gardens at Highgrove and also a series of HMY Britannia, including its decommissioning ceremony. He painted the picture presented to the Pope to commemorate his visit to Canterbury in 1982 and has painted frescoes in the traditional manner in two churches in Italy. In 1995 he was elected to The Royal Society of Portrait Painters. Selected mixed exhibitions:
