Born in Derry in 1940, Irish artist Brian Ferran has been described as "a consummate colourist with a formidable visual intelligence, a clear voice with a distinctive accent and a personal vocabulary" His paintings explore the landscape, legend and mythology of Ireland in a distinctive and emotive way, focussing on such stories as the journeys of Colmcille, and the episodes of the Tain Bo Cualigne (The Battle Raids of the Cooley Peninsula). His paintings, beneath their patterned and richly coloured surfaces contain a powerfully felt symbolism that breathes life into stories from ancient Irish history. As an artist, Brian Ferran trained at the Courtauld Institute in London and the Brera Academy in Milan before returning to Belfast to take up a position with the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, all the while continuing to paint. He was appointed as Chief Executive of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland in 1980 and remained in that role for the next ten years. Throughout a long and successful career as an artist, he has held numerous international solo exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States of America.
