The Daum crystal glass studio, based in Nancy, France was founded by Jean Daum in 1878. Jean Daum handed the business on to his sons, who oversaw its development, during the Art Nouveau period, when it became one of the leading glass studios in France. One of the distinctive features of Daum glass is the use of the pâte de verre technique, where crushed glass is placed into a mould, into which molten glass is poured to produce a design that fuses with the surface of the piece. Daum glass is also noted for the elaborate use of etching, enamelling and engraving. The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nancy houses over six hundred pieces of Daum glass, showing the history of glass making from the 1880's to the 1990's.
