| In this our second sculpture exhibition, the first in 2006 having been a runaway success, we have gathered together the cream of Irish sculptors to produce a very exciting show. The appreciation of sculpture in Ireland grows by leaps and bounds. Once one is aware of the sensuality of sculpture it can become something of an addiction. Not only is it there to be looked at and handled, it also peoples a room to a degree which a canvas cannot: it is there sharing our space, almost breathing the same air. ‘A sculpture’, wrote Matisse, ‘must invite us to handle it.’ As befits a nation which produced the beautiful artefacts on display in our National Museum in Kildare Street, we can boast of some very fine sculptors, many of whom are showing new work in this exhibition. These include the internationally renowned Rowan Gillespie, Catherine Greene, Carolyn Mulholland and Olivia Musgrave alongside the gallery’s own repertory of sculptors, Vadim Tuzov, Siobhan Bulfin, Patrick Campbell, Cody Swanson, Alina Marcellino, Mark Rode, Elizabeth le Jeune, Fiona Smith Darragh, Melissa Judge and Rosi Macauley. On this occasion we are proud to welcome several distinguished newcomers to the gallery: John Behan, Richard O’Meara, Michael Quane, Leo Higgins and Anna Campbell Linnane. Síle Connaughton-Deeny |
