Kevin Gaines is a self taught Irish artist who sculpts in wood and bronze. Rather than pursuing any formal training he learned by working with other sculptors, the first being Lev Neznansky, a Russian sculptor, who lived and worked in Ireland. It was while working with Lev, that he discovered his love of carving directly by hand in wood.

In the early 1990's he worked as an assistant to the Irish sculptor, Cathy Carman where he learned the techniques of casting in bronze. He subsequently lived and worked for four years in San Diego, California where he participated in numerous group exhibitions. On his return to Dublin he worked as an art gallery administrator, and only took up sculpture again in 2011.

Since then he has exhibited in various galleries and art fairs in Ireland and England, including the Vue Contemporary Art Fair and the IADA Fair in Dublin and with Nicholas Bowlby Fine Art at the Affordable Art Fair in Battersea, London. He also shows with the Barbara Stanley Gallery in London and the Alan Wray Gallery in Belfast, and his work has been regularly accepted for exhibition at the Royal Hibernian Academy Annual Exhibition, Dublin and the Sculpture in Context Exhibition at the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin.

His pieces on exhibition at the Jorgensen Gallery are bronze casts of sculptures that he originally carved by hand in wood. As an artist he delights in the idea of re-discovering and re-presenting the hidden beauty in cast off or insignificant objects. For this reason, his wood sculptures are carved from discarded pieces of wood such as sections from old window or door frames or old fence posts.

The abstract style of his work is dictated by his working methods, as he chooses to carve by hand, without making use of any preliminary drawings or plans. In his sculpture the tendency towards abstraction is also an attempt to evoke and capture the essential and universal energy inherent in the process of becoming, evolution and decay, a constant energy that is ever present but nevertheless, elusive.
